ETS Interpersonal Communication Seminars

This 9-week program offered each quarter emphasizes development of social self-confidence and "people skills" through weekly seminars and activities on:

  • Initiating relationships and maintaining conversations
  • Interacting confidently with others
  • Culture and communication
  • Gender and communication
  • Effective listening skills
  • Personality styles and group dynamics
  • Assertiveness

Seminars are offered each quarter. You can pick one seminar from the following schedule:

ETS Public Speaking Seminars

This 9-week program offered each quarter emphasizes development of public speaking and presentation skills through weekly seminars on:

  • Speaking confidently and with impact
  • Dealing with stage fright and anxiety
  • Speech preparation and practice
  • Using visual aids
  • Appropriate nonverbal communication

Four seminars are offered each quarter. You can pick one seminar from the following schedule:

Yearlong Leadership Programs

These yearlong programs require participants to commit to a full year. Students can apply and be admitted into the program in the Fall Quarter only. Two programs are offered - one for beginners and one for advanced students. The program involves students from each of the colleges in a yearlong program focused on developing interpersonal communication, public speaking, and leadership skills in a fun and interactive environment. The programs incorporate:

  • interpersonal communication and public speaking training
  • leadership development and application
  • teambuilding and social activities
  • community service activities
  • a student-produced capstone project

The cost for participation in the program is $175.00. Students must be able to attend the overnight ETS Leadership Retreat on October 20-21, 2007.

NOTE: A payment plan can be arranged for students who are unable to pay the full cost upfront.

ADVANCE! Leadership at the Next Level

Co-sponsored by the UCSD Express to Success Programs and Center for Student Involvement

ADVANCE! is a new advanced communication and leadership development program for juniors, seniors and graduate students at the University of California San Diego co-sponsored by the UCSD Express to Success Programs and the Center for Student Involvement. This program is designed to assist students in taking their leadership skills to the next level. Applicants should demonstrate previous leadership experience or involvement in leadership development training on campus or in the community.

Students must be able to attend each program session.

Saturdays, 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Oct 13, Nov 3, Dec 1, Jan 12, Feb 9, Mar 1, Apr 12, May 10

The application deadline for both programs is Friday, October 5, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. Applicants will be expected to attend an interview during Week 2 of Fall Quarter.

CommunicateUCSD!
(Schedule of Workshops)

CommunicateUCSD! is designed for graduate and undergraduate students who are comfortable in their interpersonal communication and public speaking abilities but wish to gain additional skills in these areas. A series of workshops are held over the course of the academic year on various topics related to communication and public speaking. In order to complete the track, each student must attend at least 12 workshops. Students who complete the track will be recognized with a certificate of completion at the ETS Leadership Banquet. You must obtain a signature for each workshop you attend.

Workshop schedules are available at the UCSD Express to Success Programs Office (3rd Floor Price Center) or online (see Schedule of Workshops above). Once you have attended the required number of sessions, turn in your Schedule of Workshops to the UCSD Express to Success Programs office no later than Friday, May 9, 2007.

ETS Peer Educators
This internship experience is a perfect addition to any resume or the Online Career Portfolio through the Career Services Center!ETS Peer Educators are selected in Spring Quarter and are expected to intern for a full academic year. Peer Educators will receive advanced public speaking training and will have the opportunity to present workshops and seminars.
