Program Overview

Success in nearly all of life's endeavors is affected greatly by your ability to effectively communicate and interact with others. These skills are critically related to employment and career success, but the same can be said for their impact on graduate and professional school, friendships, relationships, and nearly every other aspect of life.

The purpose of the UCSD Express to Success Programs (ETS) is to help students develop their public speaking, interpersonal communication, and leadership skills. The various programs provide an opportunity for all UCSD students of various skill levels to develop their understanding and application of communication skills. A certificate is awarded to each student that successfully completes any of the programs.

The ETS Programs are non-credit leadership programs offered to ALL students at UCSD, both undergraduate and graduate. All programs are FREE thanks to the generous support of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the UCSD Registration Fee Advisory Committee, and the Council of Deans.

It simply counts to speak well, to understand and be understood, to be comfortable and confident in your interactions, and to get along well with others.

Challenge yourself! Make use of this FREE resource and take a first step at becoming a better communicator and public speaker!

Did you know.....?
  • In surveys of UCSD graduates conducted since 1982, our graduates consistently report that they are under-prepared in "interacting with others" and "speaking skills."

  • In a study conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers rated "interpersonal skills" as most important of all attributes in job candidates.

  • The UCSD Corporate Focus Group specified "lack of communication skills and teamplaying skills" as the foremost area in need of improvement among UCSD students. They recommended "a greater volume of student oral presentations."

  • Among the five skills that UCSD's Corporate Focus Group identified as being in "greatest demand" were communication skills, social skills, and leadership skills. The others were technical and analytical skills.

  • The Express to Success Program (now the UCSD Express to Success Programs) began as a pilot program at Revelle College in 1999 and now is offered to undergraduates from all six colleges and graduate students.
